Sometimes in our efforts to develop our intuitive and spiritual skills and abilities, we lose sight of our progress by only looking at how far we have to go. When I get discouraged for not being as advanced as I would like to be, I remember what a wise person told me when I was 16 years old …
Let’s face it, when you are doing something you love, it’s hard to NOT want to be exceptional, or the best. However, when we beat ourselves up at our perceived lack of progress, it’s easy to overlook everything we have accomplished, and how far we have come. I recently found myself in this position, as I was looking at the skills I wanted to learn and develop as an intuitive healer and Akashic Records practitioner.
I was quietly pondering where I am vs where I would like to be, when something popped into my head that I was told when I was 16 by a mentor. She said to me “Never measure your progress in time frames of less than one year. Look at where you were at this time last year, and compare that to where you are in your skills now. I think you will find you have made a tremendous amount of progress.”
There have been several times in my life where I have remembered those words, and they have given me encouragement. I have been able to apply this wisdom to every aspect of my life, and ultimately, how I show up in the world. As I look back on each experience, I am able to put into perspective all of the knowledge and lessons I have learned, including those where I have thought that I may have fallen short in some way, or failed to achieve my goal. I have been on the spiritual path my whole life, and there have been periods of time where I have felt complete inertia, and times when I have made tremendous progress. My most recent “acceleration” in spiritual development began in December of 2017, and I have been going full throttle for the past 3 years.
Reflecting on where I was at this time last year I am pleasantly surprised at my progress. To be frank, before 2020, I had heard of the Akashic Records but it never really resonated with me. Then the old adage “when the student is ready, the teacher will appear” became applicable. That’s because in December of 2019, I saw a course advertised for Akashic Records training, and the little bell that I often hear when something is “right” for me, sounded. I tried out a session with the instructor, and suddenly everything made sense and unfolded in the most beautiful way.
It is only ever in hindsight that we can truly appreciate our progress. This time last year, I had my first Akashic Reading. I knew I was looking for a skill to add to my spiritual tool belt, but I wasn’t sure what it would be. I saw an opportunity that felt right, took action, practiced almost daily, and now, a year later, here I am, offering professional readings and writing about the Records. And I am love with it Every. Single. Day.
I realize that the speed of my progress on my spiritual journey and trajectory might be perceived as fast, but remember that I have been on this path a long time. It was my time for things to unfold as they did. So, I guess my point is mainly this – don’t be down on yourself if you are not where you think you should be, or would like to be. Be open to opportunities to learn and grow, take action, practice, practice, practice, then go and distract yourself, and have fun. Enjoy the journey! This should be fun. If you follow this formula, then regardless of where you end up, I’m sure that in a year’s time you will be pleasantly surprised at how much you have grown.
